which austrian resort?

i%26#39;m revisiting austria in feb/mar and i%26#39;m unsure of which resort to choose from. we will be a group of six or eight males and we were in soll two years ago and had a blast. we are looking for somewhere that has got a good mixture of skiing and apres ski, and preferably proximity to the lifts, and not too pricey for a night out. i think i%26#39;ve limited it down to three resorts:

ischgl, kirchberg and mayrhofen.

if anyone has been to these resorts or any other that ticks all the boxes could you please advise.

many thanks

Out of this choice it definitely is: Ischgl!

Other possibilites might be:

Saalbach

Obertauern

Kitzbuehel

Best skiing of the 3 mentioned is Ischgl in my opinion- a good ski circus with lifts that allow a visit over the border into Swiss- much apres-ski. can be pricey depending on accomodations.

Even in March usually good snow.

2nd choice -

Mayrhofen - very popular place - many young UK and Holland visitors- perhaps a little less sophisticated and chaeper than Ischgl-- still with good skiing and many bars , clubs, discos - some nice mountain huts with music too.

Both of the above have excelent snow making systems too, if nature does not provide the white stuff.

Check flights to Innsbruck, Munich - close airports

good alternative- Obertauern- closer to Salzburg- about 1 hour south of the Salzburg Airport-

Usually good snow conditions - an excelent lift system- still some good nightlife and most all hotels near to a lift.

I was there in January last year when many other resorts lacked good snow- Obertauern had good skiing.

A group of 8 went to Mayrhofen last year - skiing was great, but we found it quite quiet after 10pm!!! Not good if you%26#39;re wanting to party but grand if you prefer skiing without a hangover!!

Hi goodpikey

Definately Ischgl. Plenty off Apres Ski at all lift stations and plenty of bars to choose from. Excellent skiing and ski round to duty free Samnaun in Switzerland for gifts for the other halves in your life!! It is usually full of German/Dutch males in groups, so you%26#39;ll be ok and the mountain restaurants are big, loud and relaxing. Fun to be had by all. Look at flights to Friedrichshafen from Dublin 3 times a week with Ryanair. Some hotels in Ischgl will do airport pick up if you ask. I go through Friedrichshafen frequently and there are always groups of lads from Stansted and Dublin flights being picked up from Ischgl hotels in winter.

Another good place for lads is Soelden, which is nearer to Innsbruck airport and again very German/Dutch resort.

Mayrhofen is ok, but not as lively for lads as Ischgl, but more there than Soll, I have to say, so if that was ok, then Mayrhofen will be ok for you. Hope this helps a bit.

Happy skiing and we%26#39;ll look out for you if you%26#39;re in Ischgl. It%26#39;s one of our weekend haunts!

thanks for the replies guys,

i think that ischgl is probably the best choice for what we%26#39;re looking for but it%26#39;s working out the most expensive accomodation by far, and the prices don%26#39;t include lift passes or equipment. we%26#39;re seeing how we can stretch our budget but it looks like we may end up in mayrhofen even though it seems second best. if ican find a good deal in ischgl in the next few days i%26#39;ll jump on it. we%26#39;re departing from belfast so our tour operators seem rather limited. so far all i can really find is directski (ski mcneill) and thomsonski. if anyone has any other suggestions let me know.

thanks, mike

I would really recommend Saalbach or Obertauern as a second choice - they are very well known for the idal combination of good skiing areas and very good apres-ski. And you might more easily find affordable accomodation there.

|||

I would also say Ischgl of your list, or Obertauern.

I have a lot of Irish friends here in Vienna, and all the lads from the Soccer-club or the local GAA (quite a few pikeys and culchies amongst them :-) ) always go to Obertauern for their annual ski-weekends, and its supoosed to be a blast, if only they could remember more about it after their return, they always end up getting chicken-oriental there, if you know what I mean ...

Let me know if you need more deatils, I´ll ask the lads for tips for bars, cheap gaff or something similar ...

cheers for the input again guys but we went ahead and booked mayrhofen staying at the strass snow homes. ischgl was just working out too expensive. we%26#39;ll make the most of mayrhofen and have to say i%26#39;m really looking forward to it.
