A birthday treat

Dear all,

I%26#39;m taking Pennie my wife to Salzburg for 3 days for her birthday in mid-December. The flights are already booked, but I%26#39;m having problems getting any kind of reasonably priced hotel in the old town area. Does anyone have any recommendations for hotels under roughly 150 pounds per night either there or within say 10 minutes walk of the altstadt?

Thanks in advance for any advice received, take care, DrMike.

It seems to me that 150,- pounds per night is a very comfortable budget for Salzburg in mid december. If you%26#39;re lucky, you might even get a special offer in one of the luxury hotels like Bristol or Sacher at that rate. Check out their websites and online reservation facilities like www.venere.com

Another option would be the hotel %26quot;Friesacher%26quot;, it is located a little bit outside of the city (5 km), but in an upscale outskirt and is really romantic and top class:

A bus will take you directly into the city!

Hi nemorino79, Ulrike63.

Thank you for taking the time to reply to my post, it is very much appreciated.

We%26#39;ve ended up booking the Hotel Weisses Kreuz in the Altstadt. It has 3 good reviews and one bad one, in German so I%26#39;m still trying to translate the latter.

I always like to post a review, so will do so on my return.

Thanks again, take care, DrMike.

The German reviwe says:

%26quot;While rooms are renovated, the breakfast room and the hallway still have to be renovated (meaning that these are not nice).

Bed broke down, because the construction of the bed obviously was not professionally done.

Not the room itself, but the whole other parts of the hotel smell from food (smell of old fat). I would not eat there!

Breakfast was below average.

ArrivalTgetting there was very difficult, parking space was available.

Location was good for tourists, 100m to the Burgbahn.

Price of 120 Euros for the room including breakfast made me angry. 80 Euros would have been appropriate.%26quot;

Uh, one wonder how the reviewer came to break the bed ... ! They seemed sturdy enough when I stayed there, some years back, before the renovation. The location is excellent. The restaurant, despite what the reviewer says, is great - one of my favourites in Salzburg to which I always return. Good value too. The hotel is a bit hard to find, but it%26#39;s very quaint and atmospheric, in a very peaceful location despite being right in the centre of town (between the cathedral and the fortress). The thing that put me off when I stayed there was the the owners were clearly far more interested in running the restaurant than the guest rooms they offered. Since then they%26#39;ve upgraded and expanded the hotel side of the business, so I%26#39;m guessing they will take more of an interest in their hotel guests ...

I was thinking of going to Salzburg this Christmas so looked at the WK but thought the price was a bit steep. I booked the Weisse Taube, nearby in the Kaigasse, on www.hrs.de (Austrian Airlines hotel partner).

Hi Ulrike73.

Thank you so much for the time taken to translate the German review. I learnt the language 30 years ago at school, so would have been able to do it eventually, but it would have taken me a lot of hard work. You are too kind. If our paths cross somewhere in the world, I owe you a drink!

Roley.

Thanks for your reassurance. The Weiss Kreuz cost about £100 per night. At the time of booking it was one of the very few hotels in the Altstadt that had availability. We looked at the Weiss Taube, but it was full.

Take care one and all, DrMike.

DrMikeHarris,

you are welcome!

As I am going to London and Cambridge at the end of this month - maybe you have some special recommendations concerning restaurants?

Have a very nice trip to Salzburg, you will love it!

Maybe you can go to the Hotel Friesacher for lunch or dinner as it is really worth it.

Or you would like to make a day trip to the beautiful lake area of the Salzkammergut - St. Wolfgang (but only if the weather is fine):

And do not miss the beautiful Christmas markets in Salzburg:

Hi Ulrike.

My wife Pennie is very excited to be going to Salzburg and particularly visiting the Christmas markets. Thanks again for your very helpful suggestions.

I%26#39;m afraid I don%26#39;t know Cambridge at all, but may be able to offer some help with London restaurants depending on where you%26#39;re staying.

I hope you have a fantastic trip to England. Is it on business or for a holiday?

Take care, and thanks again for all your help, DrMike
