Hello,
Please can somebody help.
I intend to travel from Vienna to Salzburg on Monday 12th November. I wish to return the next day and I am thinking of stopping in Linz for a few hours on the way back.
What type of ticket will I need to buy? Two singles on different days or a return. Also how much will this cost me per person?
I have been on the austria train website and it is confusing me! is travelling by train the best option to get to Salzburg on this date. I have a hotel booked so would like to stay the night of 12th November.
Thanks for your help.

You just walk to the station and buy the ticket(s).
Tickets (one-way or return) are usually valid for one or two months (except online-tickets). So the best is to walk to the station and buy the tickets from the ticket windows or the ticket machines. You can stop on your way as often you want... no discount on return tickets. Small discount from the 2nd passenger on (called 1-Plus-Ticket, issued without asking).
Cost of ticket:
Wien Westbf - Salzburg Hbf - Wien Westbf € 86,80
2 adults € 156 (save € 17,60)
A stop in Linz is easy... catch trams 1,2 (direction Universität) or 3 (Bergbahnhof Urfahr) from the underground stop to the city center (Hauptplatz).

Thank you for your quick reply.
On the Tuesday I need to be back in Vienna by 1800 at the very latest. Would you advise me to spend more time in Salzburg, or would you recommend that I visit Linz for 3 or 4 hours?
I don%26#39;t know too much about the place, just thought it may be nice to stop somewhere half way back (or thereabouts). If there isn%26#39;t much to see, or if it isn%26#39;t a great place I think I will stay in Salzburg longer.
Thanks once again.
Richard.

Linz is definitely not really worth to be visited by tourists - don´t get me wrong, it is not bad at all, but it is just not as attractive from a tourist´s point of view as many other Austrian cities.
I would recommend staying longer in Salzburg.

Salzburg is a really touristy place, you%26#39;ll see this in prices, shops and often how people behave (often people in Austria say, that people from Vienna and Salzburg are TOO proud of their town)... Linz has much less tourism but a nice old-town and the largest town square in Europe, many small shops and so...
If you go there, catch the tram to Hauptplatz, there you can also find the tourism office.
You won%26#39;t have time to climb up Pöstlingberg mountain with the little, very old and steepest conventional railway... and take a ride with the grotto railway.
As you can use any train you want, so just decide when you are there. Lockers can be easily found at all larger railway stations.

Riding the little yellow tourist train (LinzCityExpress) thru the city center would also be a good idea.
