My husband and I are planning a white Christmas starting in Salzburg(Just love Salzburg) and then thinking of staying in St Wolfgang and then onto Hallstatt for a stay. We are not skiers so do not want to stay in the ski villages but have a relaxing time in that area.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how long we should stay in these towns or other places to stay as well.We have up 8 days after leaving Salzburg.
Has anyone stayed at Pension Waldhorn in St Wolfgang? Any reccommodatins of budget hotels in the area would be most welcome.
Also re Christmas Day is anything open in these towns. We had a wonderful white Christmas in Fussen last year and are hoping for the same this year. I just love reading the forums as they are so helpful when planning trips to Europe.

Hello Happy Aussie
I%26#39;m married to an Austrian and we go skiing there every year and have started going in summer too. I know it%26#39;s a ski area but you should see Kitzbuhel and it%26#39;s not far from Salzburg. Zell am See is also a nice place to stay for a night or two. How about Innsbruck too? The old town is lovely. Also, don%26#39;t worry about things being open on Christmas Day in Austria. The restaurants are usually all open. The special day in Austria is actually Christmas Eve. Shops close early and it all goes very quiet and people stay home and have a special meal - usually of fish. Hope this is helpful.

Hello Austriamad
Many thanks for your suggestions, I think we will go to Kitzbuhel and Zell am See. We have been to Innsbruck(although worth another stay!), I think we will fly in and out of Salzburg and try to get to Hallstatt as well. We do love Austria so much and are looking forward to another trip there. Any suggestions for hotels(not expensive) in Kitzbuhel and Zell am See?

Thanks Happy Aussie
We didn%26#39;t stay in Zell but visited it a few times when we were in Saalbach. In Zell we ate a couple of times at a hotel called the Grune Baum. It%26#39;s in the middle of the pedestrian centre so perfectly situated. The food was excellent and the hotel itself looked very good. It%26#39;s only a 3 star so it should be quite inexpensive.
I don%26#39;t know about hotels in Kitzbuhel. It%26#39;s quite a ritzy place so I should think they%26#39;d be quite expensive.
If you are thinking of going to the Gastein Valley there%26#39;s a lovely village called Dorfgastein and it has a beautiful hotel, Landhotel Hauserbauer. I did a review of it. It%26#39;s gorgeous.

May I reccommend if you within a famous ski area but itself is also a very famous thermal spa town around about an hour from Zell am See / Kitzbuehel. We got married there last year and it was magical. The scenery is truly outstanding, the town itself so pretty. We had a very mixed group with us, skiers and non and there was more than enough activity for everyone between the slopes, thermal baths, coffee houses and shopping....in fact, three groups of friends that were with us including my parents (usually total sun seekers) were so taken with the place that they%26#39;re going back again this year...a real winter wonderland....I can also recommend a wonderful small central hotel if you like!

Thanks Schatz - I would love the name of the hotel. I am considering Zell am See as the hotels are little cheaper. The whole area looks great though and cannot wait for another %26quot;white Christmas%26quot; like the one we had in Fussen in Southern Bavaria last year - just magic for a couple of Aussies!!!

Sorry the name of the town I was talking about in my last post was Bad Gastein in the Gasteinertal, it%26#39;s in that same area, seems to have disappeared out of the post. The name of the hotel I recommended was the Villa Excelsior, which is really reasonable and Christof the owner is a total star....so friendly and accommodating (pardon the pun!!). There is a website so you can check it out online. Enjoy....

Zell am See the hotel gruner Baum is very nice but can get a bit noisy in the skiing season. It is in the centre of the traffic free pedestrian area and the owners are super. If you are interested in a bed and breakfast pension the Villa Klothilde is super - very quiet pension ( you must get the new section of the pension) but about 5 mins walk from centre of town. Zell am See is truly a beautiful picturesque town about 1 hour 35min by train from Salzburg.
