Christmas in Vienna (shows and other matters)

Hi, I%26#39;ll be visiting Vienna around Christmas (from 22nd - 25th). Just wondering if anyone can recommend any Christmas shows or any musicals/concerts that Vienna is famous for?

Another question - I went to Salzburg once when I was a kid. I distinctively remember taking a horse-drawn carriage into the woods through the snowy forest on a cold evening. Does anyone know if such activities are available in Vienna? I would very much love to see the forests in Austria.

Many many thanks!

Generally, I always recommend the officiall database of the touristboard for such questions, it has the best overview:

www.wien.info/wtv/eventdatenbank-e.html

There are lots of wunderfull concerts, especially the %26quot;Christmas in Vienna%26quot; concert on the 22nd, or the series of Christmas music concerts in the various churches, like in St. Stephans, or the Christmas Trumpet series in the Malteserkirche, one of my own favorites.

Regarding dinners %26amp; similar: I am still awaiting the list of restaurants with speical offers over the holidays, the Tourist board should issue that within the next two weeks. I will post it asap then ! Until then, probably somebody else has some special advice ?

My personal recommendation would be e.g. Restaurant Himmelsstube, a not too big, very romantic restaurant in one of the rare igh buildings of the old town, in on of the higher floors, so you have a wonderfull view over Vienna, and they are open during the christmas evenings and days:

I am sure you will find something nice, but it might mean writing a few mails or making a few phonecalls, because many places will be closed on the night of the 24th to give staff a chance to be with their familys.

All the best for your merry christmas, Fritz

Sorry, I forgot about the carriages:

Well, assuming there is snow, you could rent a fiaker and have yourself taken through the winterly prater, thats something I could imagine well. Here is a link to a company which provides fiaker-carriages, and they also have license for tours through the park of Schloss Schönbrunn Plaave, that could be nice in the winter as well, provided its sunny ...

For anything bigger then that, you would have to get out of the town, and go at least 30 min. to an hourrs driving out, a few links for this:

Thanks Fritz. I did a quick search on concerts based on your recommendation and found this site quite handy: www.classictic.com with a whole lists of christmas concerts in Vienna!

Thanks for the restaurant recommendation, I%26#39;m looking into it right now. Looking good!!!

I thought it would snow in Vienna over Christmas - argh... seems like I was wrong.
