I have recived some conflicting information on currency exchange. Some people say that credit cards and debit cards are a ripoff in a foreign country due to high transaction fees. Other say it s a good deal becuase of the ease.
Still again some say some of the best rates can be achived in your own country. What has been your experience?

we normally use the bank to exchange money
the charges on your debit and credit card depends on your bank , please ask them.
You get charge one fee per transaction so better exchange one bigger ammouts
Smaller shops, smaller restaurants, supermarkets , bakeries don´t accpept credit cards
Diners Club and American Express are not often accepted in Vienna

Thanks a bunch, I have decieded to exchange 25% at my local bank 25% at the atm in vienna 25% to be used on credit card and 25% in my own currency. That should leave me covered for whatever.

Living in Italy earning dollars is brutal. With the weakness of the dollar, you are goin gto get three or so rates...bad, worse, worse still and ..well you get the idea. But ditto above, your bank will give you a current rate, so atm can be fine,,,you want to check the internatinal transaction fee however or and other fees.

I do not believe that you will find better exchange rates in your own country as can be found here in such places as ATMs.
Please to not use one of these prepaid cards- too many fees.
Please do not bring many dollars.
Many places will not exchange them including some banks as it is just too much trouble for small sums.
Exchange places that will exchange dollars offer very poor rates.
Some will say %26quot; Commission Free %26quot; - Yes - no extra commission they make profit from the terrible rate they offer you.
An ATM ,called Bankomat here, is your best way to exchange
1.. you do not need to carry cash.for face possible theft or loss
2. Probably best possible exchange rate - even with a charge by your bank for use.
3. convenient - many , many ATM s can be found- ,many available almost 24 hours daily
Your credit card can also be a good way to pay for hotels, purchases.
As mentioned above and good advice- many smaller places will only accept euro ( cash ) for purchases.
Visa , Mastercard best cards to bring.
