I am plannng to cycle the Danube bike trail with a large family group next May. We will take our own bikes and would prefer not to go on an organised tour. Does anyone have any advice about accommodation or other good hints?

You do not mention where your journey is to begin or end- i try to give some general things.
The Danube bike trail makes for a fantastic vacation- most paths are dedicated just to biking, making for a safe and comfortable ride.
most paths are paved and well marked.
No need for an organized tour . May is not %26quot; High Season %26quot; and usually no need for reservations.
many pensions along the way to choose in reasonable price categories. Also many restaurants , markets to buy water and other supplies.
This way you can travel at your own rate , stop where you wish, sightsee as you wish, without pressure to be some place.
Generally the left side of the river going downstream has more offerings especially in Austria.
Melk Abbey, the towns Grein, Spitz ,Weissenkirchen , Dürnstein deserve some extra time .
The area of the Wachau also is famous for its wine . Stop and have a test and enjoy the good food many places will offer.
If you can provide some places you may to stop , many can probably offer good advice on accomodations.
also numerous maps and guides available too if you have not already looked for them.

Should add - if you have not done so already - much on google
if you enter Danube Bike Trail
such as
www.mayq.com
also a contributor here as Operettaman and on Fodors as Operaman has a good website with experience of a Danube Bike trip with good photos and descriptions.

Thank you for your reply. We would like to start our trip in Passau and cycle to Vienna. We have 7 days to complete our ride. I think we will need to book our accommodation because we are a mixed family group of adults and children (16 people in total) and we need to know where we are aiming for each day. We can not afford to stay in expensive hotels.

Hello !
I see your concern with your large group and a need to reserve.
Many nice pensions along the way that are clean , comfortable and not expensive.
This is especially true from Passau to Krems- less so from Krems to Vienna perhaps you may wish to spend the last night in Klosterneuburg just outside of vienna.
If you can provide some idea of stopping places - i know a little of the area and could provide some names of places to stay .
Example - many nice places in Emmersdorf - just across the river from Melk ( easy crossing by a bridge there. Less costly than staying in Melk and nicer in my opinion.

Thank you for your reply. I have looked at the link you advised. The route ridden by Maya looks good to me. The distances are suitable for our group. He stopped at Scholgen, Linz, Grein, Melk (but you suggest Emmersdorf) Krems and then to Vienna (or your suggestion of Klosterneuburg which would be better for us as cycling into Vienna with a large group is a little daunting).
Thanks

Biking into Vienna shouldn´t concern you, I live along the bike route that comes in from Klosterneuburg, you just stay on the bikepath that goes along the river, first along the big danube, then along the danube canal, straight downstream, no usage of public roads whatsorever, until you are right in the heart of town at Schwedenplatz square, from there you can choose if you just wanna walk or even bike on through the old town, but on public roads then, or you leave the bikes somehwere there (don´t forget the locks) and walk on, or you can use the dedicated bikepath around the Ringstrasse boulevard, which actually takes you to many many sigths along the route, but there are a few more hectic points, where you have to cross the multilane road a few times, so probably not the rigth thing when you have very small kids with you in the group ! But for the rest, its a nice ride into town !
But if you prefer to leave the bikes out in Klosterneuburg, there is a a highly frequent commuter-train connection into Vienna.

We have done the Linz to Vienna part of this ride (although we took the train from Krems back to Vienna as that part of the ride is not so interesting). Look to our site for many rec%26#39;s on where to stay:

It is a great ride in May, but be prepared for the occasional rain shower.
Vertical,
Do you happen to reside on some famous grounds in the Wachau region?
