Hi all
My fiancee and I will be coming to Vienna for the first time in December to visit the Christmas Markets.
We travelled to Salzburg last year and found the markets to be enchanting. I%26#39;ve had a scout around on the forum but haven%26#39;t found anything recent regarding the markets in Vienna so wondered if someone could post some suggestions, tips etc on what to see and do?
I understand that there are different markets in Vienna, do these have different themes for example? I%26#39;d also like to know which is the most visually impressive, such as the best backdrop (I know that is somewhat subjective), or which is the largest and the like.
Thanks in advance
Matt

The most famous one is the Christmas market in front of the Vienna City hall, which is REALLY BIG, and can be a bit full during late afternoon / early evening hours and weekends, but one can always escape into the surrounding park and enjoy the decorated park trees.
Smaller markets include a beautyfull one in front of the Palace of Schönbrunn or on the Freyung-square, or in front of the Karlskirche, if the weather is very bad or windy, I recommend the markets on Spittelbergm, which has lots of small art-stands, a wonderfully renovated artists- and going-out district behind the Museumsquartier, or the market in the %26quot;Altes AKH%26quot;, the courtyard of the former General hospital, a huge old complex in the 9th district, as these are encircled by buildings and not so exposed to wind and weather.
Just put %26quot;Vienna%26quot; and %26quot;christmas%26quot; into the searchengine, and you will find many links and posts on the topic, its a jolly season in the town, had the first punsch already this weekend !

In my opinion , the market by Shönbrunn Palace is most visually impressive.
It opens November 24.
Many nice kiosks selling many nice items from glass ware to wooden toys , to tin tree ornaments-
small musical events too make it even more special
Nice to combine a visit to the Schloss 8 Palace ) a walk in the garden if weather is good - even a nice restaurant in one of the outer buildings of the Schloss - just look for signs - great place to get warm and rest too.

The old market at Freyung is also very nice with music also .
nice kiosks for a little food and punsch.
The market at the old AKH is often overlooked by tourists is very nice witha few rides for kids.

the market between the Fine Arts and Natural History Museum on the Ringstrasse is also good and visually fantastic.
The market now to be in its second year was very nice last year assume this year will have same or similar offerings
The Rathaus market is the largest - mostly cheap goods - much it seems from China or similar - many places to buy some food - very crowded evenings- perhaps nicest thing is to walk through the park and admire lighting and avoid the market
